Poompuhar is the correct answer. Chola’s are the only Indians credited with invading foreign lands.
As Indians, every one must read the Wikipedia page on Chola navy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chola_Navy) to know about the practices of custom duty, escorting of trade ships, anti-dumping duty etc… that were so well established so many, many centuries ago. The naval hierarchy, combat formations are an interesting read. Note the point on how foreigners were hired to build boats in India then. Do take time to read it once.
There were two popular navies in Indian history- Shivaji’s & Chola’s. While Shivaji’s navy was primarily defensive in nature & restricted itself to Maratha empire, Chola’s navies were offensive & explored (Captured) new foreign territories like Cambodia etc.. Yet Shivaji is considered as father of Indian Navy & INS Shivaji exists where as there is no INS Chola or something like that. It is a great injustice akin to Einstein & Gandhi missing in the lost of Nobel laurettes.
