I have been a regular to the Mangalore region since 2009 on account of the Lanco Power project. I had some good time in this project. I have postulated a few management theories, and classic case histories based on my experiences in this project. Looking for audience to begin dissemination.
Manglore is famous for beedies, clay roof tiles & excellent fish dishes. The entire stretch starting from Bhatkal to Mangalore is a “click and drag’ of Gods own country; numerous back waters cut through the national highway ( as the government calls the pot hole ridden roads ) before its eternal embrace with the ocean.
The road from Manglore to Hasan in the ghats are populated with thick dense forests, so thick that sunlight has not kissed the earth for many decades in many parts of the forest.. The roads have succeeded in humbling the mighty Volvo giving me a much longer time to enjoy the virgin unspoilt forests. Suggest to travel in monsoons. Every where there are 4 to 5 stones and water keeps cascading down them. Not many buildings around in the hills. But for the traffic, the silence in this region is deafening(?).
Much higher & up above the road in the distant hill, a glimmering thin blue line is moving. Its an engineering feat to have the train running in this terrain.
Manglore is a cultural , geographical, linguistic & multi -religion cauldron. People from Kerela, Goa and Karnataka can lay equal claim on Manglore. Its probably this mix that puts it in the wrong news for moral policing, communal clashes etc. But personally, most of the persons here are good soft spoken and God fearing., ( like Murai???)
Manglore is also world famous for “ Gadbad” . For more details google “Gadbad” or click on (http://www.alwaysfoodie.com/gadbad-ice-creamsomething-missing.html). In the simplest form, it is a cocktail of 3 flavours of icecream, lot of nuts, fruits, honey, jelly, milk and cream. It originated and is a speciality here. A trip to Manglore is incomplete without a pilgrimage to Pabba’s outlet which serves the best . The “Ideal” group has the largest parlour with a seating capacity of 300. All other exotic variants of icecream dishes are based on this basic combination. Atleast 20 variants exists. Caution: This dish is not for the diet conscious. Usshhhhha ( my school classmate ) –The thought of Gadbad also brings your face and warnings to my mind. While at the parlour, I have to temporarily anesthetize my mind of your thoughts.( and howz that to a professional anestheticist).
With a strong Christian community around, the plum cakes, macroons, veg puffs are really excellent ( Suggestion: Try kochin Bakery – any auto will take you there).
In 2010, I was stuck up with my project work in Manglore. I wanted to surprise Geetha on her birthday which was coming around in a week. I had stolen one of her blouses and dress to get a new one tailor made at Manglore. Amidst the busy site schedule, I managed to get the dress materials. Getting time to find a lady tailor was becoming difficult. During lunch, I rushed to Suratkal nearby and found an outlet just beyond the Suratkhal flyover on the right side – when you travel to Manglore -having a ladies tailoring outfit.
I was explaining to the girl there, the neck & back pattern I wanted. She pointed to the neck pattern in the dress she was wearing and asked with all innocence - if that design was okay. I was in a delicate position looking at that geographical area of hers - though my school and college conduct certificates declares me to be a good boy. Aged look has its privileges, ( RSK theory no.1071)
In 2007, we decided to celebrate our wedding anniversary at the Turtle Bay beach Resort in the region. It was a daymare.
